Oil Plants

To oil plants we rank such plants, which contain economically significant quantity of oil. In general the quality is regulated according to ČSN 46 2300-1.

»Oil seed rape – (Brassica napus L. subs. Oleifera)

The oil seed rape is the most important oil plant in the Czech Republic and its share in the Czech Republic in processing of the oil plant production is approximately 95%. After 1989 the oil seed rape became a strategic transformation crop of the Czech agriculture, for it compensated the decrease of the feeding crop areas and maintains the balance of humus in soil, including the remedial effects on soil. The quality is considered according to ČSN 46 2300-2.

»Annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

The annual sunflower is the second important oil plant in the Czech Republic (after the winter oil seed rape). The sunflower is grown especially for the dietetic very quality oil, which belongs to the most popular vegetable oils and then as a component of birdseed. The quality is regulated according to ČSN 46 2300-6.

»Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.)

The opium poppy is a very important oil plant, whose growing has many years of tradition in this country. In the latest years the sown area has significantly increased. In the Czech Republic (but also in other countries) the opium poppy is described as a source of addictive (narcotic) substances, therefore in case of growing of the opium poppy it is necessary to comply with provisions arising from the Act No. 167/1998 Coll. The quality is regulated according to ČSN 46 2300-3.

»Mustard

The mustard seed is utilized in canning industry for production of table mustard. At the same time the mustard is the most frequent stubble inter-crop utilized for green manure. The quality is regulated according to ČSN 46 2300-4.

• White mustard (Sinapis alba L.) – comes form the Mediterranean, it is 1 m tall, has golden yellowish flowers and non-shiny, light yellow seeds. As a spice it is utilized the seed.
• Black mustard (Brassica nigra L.) – it is a bit taller, the seeds have a dark red-brown colour.
• Indian mustard (Brassica juncea Cos., especially sarept) – has light brown seeds and it is grown in India, China and Russia.

»Common flax (Linum usitatissimum)

In the Czech Republic the flax Len is only a peripheral oil plant, whose areas have been still decreasing for the latest years. Into the group of the oilseed flax it is possible to rank as well as the food flax. The oil flax seed is mainly utilized for production of technical oil. The food flax seed is utilized as a raw material in bakery and pharmaceutical industries. The quality is regulated according to ČSN 46 2300-5.
